I thought that the nerdiness of the Perimeter Institute‘s bar (named hbar) and restaurant (named Pi) could not be topped. Alas, I was wrong. The Physics Department at University of Manchester (UK) can give the Perimeter Institute a run for the money. Check out their own bar:
Their own advertisement reads “there are no mistakes in our coffee”, which I guess betrays a somewhat limited and confused understanding of what an “error” is in physics… but hey, it is the thought that counts, right ?
Can it get any geekier than this ?

LOL@TR!
One of the bars in my undergrad student union building was called “The Mens Bar”. Officially this stood for “mens sana in corpore sano” because it was the sports bar, and indeed it was often full of drunken rugby players. To such an extent that it could be an intimidating place for a lone woman to venture into on a Wednesday evening (Wednesday being sports day in UK universities). Which made people think that the Mens Bar was just for men. Which made women avoid it. Which perpetuated the unwelcoming atmosphere, and the myth about the name.
At least twice a year there would be a petition to change the name. Some men would get angry and point out that while the Mens Bar was not just for men, there was a Womens’ Room in the same building (tea, cakes, counselling / crisis centre) that would not let men in, that this was grossly unfair, and that they were going to ask to make the Mens Bar men only to even things up. Some women would get angry and say that it was those kinds of people and attitudes that made the Women’s Room necessary.
This had been going on since before I started going there, and continued after I left. I wonder if they ever changed the name?
My friends and I would start our Friday nights in the (non-smoking) Cochrane Lounge, and then alternate between the Attic (house music) and Bass-ment (indie music) club rooms, avoiding the Mens Bar entirely. Much more fun.

Cath, Mens Bar sounds really boring, if you ask me… I’ll take the Error Bar any day…
